The 5-step walkthrough

Designed to be doable in one sitting if you have your records ready.

  1. Determine if you missed it

Pull your TY2025 return. Look at line 8 (additional income) and the qualified-tips deduction line on Schedule 1-A. If your TY2025 W-2 reported tip wages and you did not reduce AGI by the qualified-tips amount, you may have a refund coming.

Not sure? Run the decoder for TY2025 first — it tells you the deduction amount and whether your filed return appears to have claimed it.

  2. Gather W-2s and tip records

Collect your TY2025 W-2(s), pay stubs that show tips, any tip-allocation worksheets your employer provided, and a copy of your originally-filed TY2025 return. If your employer did not separately report tip wages on the original W-2, you may need a corrected W-2 (W-2c) — Step 4 covers the path.

  3. Calculate the deduction

Use the decoder to calculate the qualified-tips deduction (capped at $25,000) and qualified-overtime deduction (capped at $12,500 single / $25,000 MFJ) for TY2025, including any MAGI phase-out. The decoder shows the math line-by-line so you can transcribe it onto Form 1040-X with confidence.

Decoder math for TY2025 honors the IRS Notice 2025-69 §3 transition guidance — reasonable methods for TTOC identification when the W-2 predates the final reg.[1]

  4. Complete Form 1040-X

On Form 1040-X for TY2025: Column A = original amounts; Column B = the change (the deduction you are now claiming); Column C = corrected amounts. Attach a corrected Schedule 1-A showing the qualified-tips and qualified-overtime deduction lines. Include a brief explanation in Part III citing the qualified-tips deduction under P.L. 119-21 §70201.

See the IRS Form 1040-X instructions for the current form revision.

  5. File and track refund

TY2025 1040-X can be e-filed in most cases (the IRS expanded e-file for amendments). Processing typically takes 8–16 weeks; the IRS pays interest on amended-return refunds from the original-filing date. Track at IRS.gov > Where's My Amended Return.

Confirm current 1040-X e-file availability and processing-time ranges directly with the IRS before you file — these change between filing seasons. Track an already-filed amendment on the IRS Where's My Amended Return page.
